Saturdays with Kay Warren: ‘Everything I knew was wrong’ (Part 2)

LAKE FOREST, Calif. (WordNews.org) May 5, 2012 – Authors are the experts, it would seem.

But Kay Warren said she was the learner while researching and writing her latest book, ‘Choose Joy: Because Happiness Isn’t Enough.”

“I started from a place of ignorance, so I learned a lot,” Warren told WordNews.org.

Warren is the wife of Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church pastor Rick Warren, who is also the author of the best-selling “The Purpose Driven Life.”

“I think I learned that just about everything I knew about joy was wrong,” she said. “I started from a place of feeling desperate.”

Warren said she has struggled with low levels of depression most of her life. But then, she found herself dealing with external circumstances “that began to pile up within my family and within myself.”

She turned to the Bible and she noticed “that it seemed like joy was something I was supposed to be experiencing on a regular basis.”

But she wasn’t.

“I finally got to the place where [I said], ‘OK, something is desperately wrong here. Either I am a sub-par Christian or there’s something I don’t understand about joy.”

Warren said that question led her on a journey, which meant going back to the Bible and trying to find out “where was I missing it.”

“For me,” Warren said, “I discovered everything I knew was wrong.”
