Thursdays with Brandon Heath: Staying grounded, ‘Doing what I was born to do’ (Part 4 in a series)

NASHVILLE (WordNews.org) Nov. 17, 2011 – If you listen to Christian radio much, you don’t have to wait long for a Brandon Heath tune to come on.
Hits like “Give Me Your Eyes” and his current hit, “You Put Your Light In Me,” get lots of airtime.
How’s a guy stay grounded?
“I have a men’s group of about four guys that I meet with,” he said.
Because Brandon tours mostly on weekends, “I get to be home with the fam over the week and then I’ve got a mentor that asks me a lot of tough questions sometimes. [And] I have a counselor,” he said. “So, I think that it’s pretty extraordinary, if I think about it. I have some pretty awesome people in my life. But I’ve made it a priority to have them. It’s important that they’re around.”
Because of his high visibility in Christian music and his strong message about being a disciple of Christ, Brandon also senses spiritual attacks.
“We were feeling it last week. We were having some trouble on a show and we were like, ‘Satan, go away. There’s no room for you here.’ I definitely feel a little attack every once in awhile. A lot of times it’s internal. It wouldn’t be obvious to people.”
What do you mean “internal.”
“It might be doubts or it might be just legitimacy,” Brandon explained. “A lot of the mainstream don’t see any value in what we’re doing. And so for me, there would be, ‘Oh man, so I don’t have a larger audience. Maybe what I’m doing is not important.’ Then I think about those stories that we were talking about earlier that I hear and it’s so important.”
At those moments, it becomes clear just how important it is to have those solid Christian friends in his life.
“I got an email this morning from a friend reminding me how importhat it is what I do … So, I’m lucky to have great people in my life that constantly remind me I’m doing what I was born to do.”
