NASHVILLE (WordNews.org) Dec. 13, 2011 — The songs Christian recording artist Mark Schultz began to write got a little more personal than ski outings and mission trips.
“There was a kid in the youth group who got cancer and the youth pastor was like, ‘Hey, why don’t you write a song about that?’”
Mark did.
“I wrote a song called he’s my son about a Dad praying over his son who has cancer and that became not only a Christian hit but a mainstream hit.”
He looks back on the experience at the church where he was a youth minister and says he learned a great lesson.
“I realized whenever you tell stories about real life, write songs about real life, it resonates with people because what’s real resonates.”
One song Mark penned cut a little close to home.
“The family I lived with for a few months when I first moved to Nashville, they took care of me like they were my parents,” he said. “At the time they were 75 years old and they told me about the first date they ever went on and how he walked her home from the movies.”
A decade later, Mark visits the couple in a nursing home.
‘And he’s still walking her home down the hallway to her room and I’m like, ‘There’s a story right there to me.’ For me, it all starts with real life and trying to turn real life into an art. And I think that’s what moves people.”
