Komen reverses decision on Planned Parenthood; Pro-life groups urge Komen boycott

DALLAS (WordNews.org) Feb.3, 2012 — The Susan G. Komen charity has reversed itself and will provide grants to abortion provider Planned Parenthood, just days after announcing it would not.

“Our original desire was to fulfill our fiduciary duty to our donors by not funding grant applications made by organizations under investigation,” said founder and CEO Nancy Brinker, on behalf of the board. “We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair.”

Pro-life groups were upset by the decision.

“The current messy confusion regarding the relationship between Komen and Planned Parenthood is a reminder of how crucial it is to stop and think before pledging financial support to any organization,” said author Teresa Tomeo. “What’s most upsetting is to see Komen actually apologizing to the American public because of Planned Parenthood — the largest abortion provider in the country; an organization that doesn’t even offer mammograms in the first place, only referrals; an organization that is under investigation by Congress; and an organization that has a long list of issues, too many to mention. The entire situation is outrageous,” she added. “And in the end, women continue to be hurt. Women are not getting the full story from Komen — and especially not Planned Parenthood — regarding the connection between abortion and the increased risk in breast cancer, and cancer risks associated with oral contraceptives.”

Austin Ruse, president of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute, urged people to boycott Komen.

“Today the Susan G. Komen Foundation made an announcement that appears that they have reversed themselves on funding of Planned Parenthood. While I do not believe they have reversed themselves, it may turn out to be the case. We do not know,” she said. “What happened this week was nothing short of a Mafia shakedown campaign by Planned Parenthood against the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Planned Parenthood told the Komen Foundation ‘either give us money or we will destroy you.’ They were aided and abetted in this hostage taking by the mainstream media.”

Pro-lifers need to take action, she said.
“At this point, pro-lifers should cease their support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. We should wait and see what happens. We know there are five more Komen grants to Planned Parenthood in the pipeline. If any more come up, we will know we have lost and Planned Parenthood has won,” Ruse said.

Life Decisions didn’t take a wait and see approach.

“The Susan G. Komen Foundation has caved in to the demands of radical abortion apologists,” said Douglas R. Scott, Jr., president of Life Decisions International (LDI), a Planned Parenthood watchdog group. Scott was speaking about the recently announced statement by The Susan G. Komen Foundation reversing its decision to end support of the world’s most vociferous pro-abortion Goliath.

“If Komen officials did not expect to face the wrath of Planned Parenthood and its media allies they were extremely na
