NEW YORK (WordNews.org) – Tim Tebow’s recent trade from the Denver Broncos to the New York Jets has some people wondering how the born-again, straight-laced quarterback will fare in Sin City.
Author Paul Hughes isn’t concerned.
“He’s so even keel that I’m not worried,” said Hughes. “I don’t know if (the hype) is going to touch him.”
Hughes is the author of e-book Tebow: Throwing Stones.
Tebow’s trade to the Jets set Tebowmania ablaze once again. He faced the New York media for the first time this week and won over the 200 scribes.
As a backup quarterback to starter Mark Sanchez.
In fact, he’s already got a sandwich named after him at the famous Carnegie Deli—the JetBow.
The only criticism of Tebow’s New York appearance was his over-use of the word “excited.”
Hughes isn’t a fan of the hype and hysteria surrounding the now iconic backup quarterback, but he understands it.
“We seek to be connected to things bigger than we are,” he said. “Then when people show up who represent that, we gravitate towards them.”
His advice to Tebow: Just stay the course off the field.
“If he just keeps doing what he’s doing, he won’t have a problem with (being in New York),” he said.
Hughes followed Tebow during his years as a Florida Gator.
“My college team was the [University of  Southern California] Trojans, so I wasn’t necessarily a Tebow fan,” he said.
However, once Tebow made it to the professional stage, Hughes had to take notice.
“Then he got drafted, and he did that Super Bowl commercial with his mom,” said Hughes, “Then I looked at it and realized that I really appreciate when Christians who are in the public eye do not necessarily meet the expectations of outside people.”
Hughes thinks there’s something people are missing when analyzing the Tebow move to New York. He’s just not sure what.
“I’m interested in this trade because there’s probably something that most people aren’t looking at, including me,” said Hughes, “People don’t think two or three steps down the line.”
As for the anticipated controversy of two quarterbacks seeking starting positions, Hughes hopes Tebow can make a difference on the field.
“I would love to see (the Jets) totally break conventional wisdom and platoon (Sanchez and Tebow),” said Hughes.
