WASHINGTON, D.C. (WordNews.org) April 26, 2012 — The entire Bible will be read in front of the U.S. Capitol during a 90-hour readathon that begins on Friday.

This is the 23rd annual Capitol Bible Reading Marathon. It begins at 6 p.m. with Genesis 1:1. It will end on Tuesday, May 1, with the reading of Revelation 22:21, the final verse of the Bible.

Organizers said during the five days, hundreds of Christians will gather on the west front of the Capitol to read a portion of the Bible, listen and pray.

The U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon began in 1990, the year proclaimed by a Joint Congressional Resolution and Presidential Proclamation by President George H.W. Bush as the International Year of Bible Reading.

Readers come from many backgrounds and locations all across America and around the globe. It will be heard in several languages and Bibles translated in 100 languages will be available.

During the event, members of Congress and Christian leaders and pastors stand alongside street people, families, military personnel, school children, nurses, teachers, and otherwise ordinary believers raise up the Word of God, organizers said.

The U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon is a part of a weeklong celebration of prayer and the word across the nation. Bible reading marathons will be taking place in many state capitals and county seats in conjunction with the National Day of Prayer.
