Group charges prejudice against Israel at Olympics

LONDON (WordNews.org) July 27, 2012 — As the Olympic Games officially kick off tonight, one group is charging an anti-Israel bias at the games.

The British Broadcasting Association’s Olympic website omitted Jerusalem as Israel’s capital; and the Olympic Committee declined to acknowledge the 40th anniversary of the Munich Massacre with a moment of silence during today’s opening ceremony. In 1972, 11 Israeli athletes were killed by an Islamic Palestinian gunman.

And back at home, the Obama administration refused to acknowledge Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

In a press briefing yesterday, White House spokesman Jay Carney was asked repeatedly what the Administration considers to be the capital of Israel, Jerusalem or Tel Aviv. He declined to answer, saying the reporter knew the answer. “Our position has not changed,” he said. “You know our position.”

“Just 70 years after the 6 million Jews were massacred in Europe, this week has shown that the stench of anti-Semitism still lingers in the air,” said Mat Staver, founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel.  “Israel is America’s best ally in the Middle East. America and Israel share common values. America stands with Israel. Liberty Counsel stands with Israel.”

Liberty Counsel wants the viewing public to join two Israeli Olympian widows, Ankie Spitzer and Ilana Romano, who were asking the law firm to stand for a moment of silence when International Olympic Committee Chief Jacques Rogge rises to speak at tonight’s ceremony. Staver is urging people to “turn off the sound of our television sets, remember those Jews who have fallen, and pray for the peace of Israel.”
