Church leaders urged to be active in voter registration

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WordNews.org) Sept. 21, 2012 – A pastor asks all those in the congregation who are voting age to stand.
He follows up by asking those who are registered to sit down.
Quickly, ushers come down the aisle to pass voter registration forms to those still standing.
It’s an example Liberty Counsel shares with pastors as the Christian law firm urges pastors to be more active in this year’s election.
Liberty Counsel has a link on its website where people can request a voter registration form. The firm is also providing information on what pastors and churches are permitted t0 do  regarding political activity.
Church leaders have two more Sundays, Sept. 23 and Sept. 30, to get their members ready to cast their ballots on Election Day. Registration deadlines can be found at http://usa.gov/Citizen/Topics/Voting.shtml.
Liberty Counsel said there is misinformation on what churches and ministries are allowed to do.
“The truth is, churches may host voter registration drives, be a host site for balloting, or even host a forum where candidates address the congregation or answer questions from a moderator,” said Mat Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “Candidates visiting the church may be introduced, and political candidates may even preach in the pulpit, so long as the pulpit is not used as a political forum to urge the members to vote in favor of the candidate.”
