NASHVILLE (WordNews.org) Oct. 12, 2012 – Chris August’s favorite song on his latest album, The Upside of Down, was born in the backseat of a “little weird minivan thing in India.”
August and producer Ian Eskelin were on a mission trip in Kodaikanal, India, in January.
“Anytime you drive in India it’s going to be crazy, I’m going to be honest with you—you kind of fear for your life,” August told WordNews.org. “”I remember I was feeling sick. I told my friend Ian Eskelin, ‘Here’s my idea. We’ve got to write this song.’”
The song, Restore, is about the hardships of marriage without Jesus in the center.
He was inspired to write the song following the impact 7X70 “about me coming from a broken home, broken family.”
“I would hear multiple stories after every show about how that song had inspired people to give forgiveness a shot,” August said. “I heard story after story and so it really got to me with all these marriages. I was hearing some pretty crazy stories that usually people would not forgive the other person and God completely restored it.”
August told Eskelin he had to write a song about restoration.
“You can see a billboard for a quick and cheap divorce. We’ve made it so easy to quit,” August said. “We’ve got to write this song.”
So, while in India, the song Restore came to him.
“I have what’s called a Baby Taylor, a little miniature acoustic guitar and I’m just back there strumming along and singing this song and I’m starting to feel stick because we’re weaving up and down this mountain. It’s crazy. But I was like, ‘I’ve got to get this song out.”
It’s not August’s typical approach to songwriting.
“The writing process for that song, it was a hard one,” he said, “but I’m definitely glad we kept at it because that’s going to be one of my favorite songs for sure on this record.”
He said there’s a story for every song.
“I put 14 songs on the album,” August said, “and there’s basically 14 stories behind each of those.”
