Massive turnout expected from ‘values voters’

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WordNews.org) Nov. 6, 2012 — The longest and costliest presidential campaign comes to an end today — Election Day — when voters will cast their ballots for President Barack Obama or his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Newsites today are painting different pictures of each campaign, with The New York Times reporting that Obama has made recent gains in polls and Romney now a long shot.

And the Drudge Report carries stories of Obama ending his campaign in half-empty arenas — even with Bruce Springsteen and Jay-Z on hand to pump up the crowd– and polls, including Rasmussen and Gallup, putting Romney ahead.

What could make a difference in today’s results is a massive Election Day turnout by values voters, which the Family Research Council Action says is expected. In the last 14 months FRC Action’s Values Bus has crisscrossed the country campaigning for values in 28 states. The Values Bus was greeted by enthusiastic crowds as it spent the final weekend of this election cycle in Ohio, FRC said.

“In my almost 20years involved in politics, I have never seen values voters so energized,” said Family Research Council Action President Tony Perkins. “This level of intensity is clearly driven by this administration’s policies that are so hostile to religious freedom. The Obamacare’s mandates are a clear infringement on religious freedom.”

This year, in advance of the election, FRC has:

  • helped register nearly 500,000 new values voters and distributed millions of voter guides through FRC’s allies and its network of more than 18,000 churches.
  • hosted a major simulcast, “iPledge Sunday 2012,” which reached over 6,000 churches and home groups and aired on Christian television networks across the country.
  • toured the country this year with the Heritage Foundation for the “Your Money, Your Values, Your Vote” Values Bus tour. The tour has traveled more than 70,000 miles through 28 states over the last 14 months.
  •  spent over $550,000 on TV and radio ads in closely contested congressional races.
  • hosted its annual Values Voter Summit, the largest gathering of social conservatives every year in Washington, D.C.

“President Obama talks about the freedom of worship which is what we do within the four walls of the church,” Perkins said. “However, values voters are concerned about the freedom of religion which is the ability to live your life according to the teachings of your faith. These voters see that freedom of religion is under attack by this President. I would not be surprised to see tomorrow’s turnout of values voters eclipse what we saw in 2004.”

American Family Association is providing live election coverage with its president ,Tim Wildmon, and Sandy Rios that can be viewed online or on your smartphone beginning at 6 p.m. Central time. The coverage will include readers’ tweets and Facebook posts as well as minute-to-minute election returns.

AFA’s Presidential Prayer Team offered these recommendations for prayer:

  • Pray for your choices and ask God to lead you as you vote.
  • Pray that integrity and honesty will prevail in the voting process.
  • Pray for the protection and accurate counting of every ballot, including absentee and military ballots (although the current administration has been attempting to suppress the latter).
  • Pray that those who believe in prayer will turn out at the polls to ensure their Christian values are voiced and protected.
