saeedIRAN (WordNews.org) Jan. 29, 2013 – The American Center for Law and Justice is lobbying the United Nations, European Union and the Council in an effort to secure the release of American Pastor Saeed Abedini, who was sentenced to eight years in prison in one of Iran’s most “brutal and deadly prisons—simply because of his Christian faith.”
According to the Mail, Abedini is a U.S. citizen who was bron in Iran but lived in Idaho. The 32-year-old was arrestedfor preaching Christianity in people’s home in Iran.
ACLJ says his sentence violates Iran’s own constitution and violates multiple international human rights treaties that Iran has voluntarily and willingly signed.
Today, former Sen. John Kerry, during his confirmation hearing to become Secretary of State, said he would work for Abedini’s release.
“I, along with the U.S. government, condemn Iran’s continued violation of the universal right of freedom of religion and call on the Iranian authorities to respect Mr. Abedini’s human rights and release him,” Kerry said. “The Department of State is in close contact with the Abedini family and is actively engaged on this case.”
In letters to the United Nations, European Union and Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, the ACLJ also wrote: “Take all available diplomatic action to press Iran to respect human rights and release Pastor Saeed.”
