SAN DIEGO, March 5, 2013 — People’s focus is all wrong, says Pastor Miles McPherson, a former NFL player who now leads The Rock Church.
In McPherson’s new book, “God in the Mirror: Discovering Who You Were Created To Be,” released by Baker Publish Group, McPherson urges readers to think less about themselves and more about God, and His plan for their lives.
“Human beings are created in God’s image; if we really take that truth to heart and live our lives in light of it, everything changes,” said. “When we live more and more in Him, we begin to experience transformed relationships with each other and with God.”
McPherson knows something about being transformed by God. A Long Island native, he was a defensive back for the San Diego Chargers. Two years into his NFL career, he was “battling a drug problem and living an immoral lifestyle. That’s when he gave his life to Jesus Christ, and never looked back,” according to McPherson’s website.
McPherson retired from the NFL in 1986, became a youth pastor and began attending Azusa Pacific University’s School of Theology, receiving his Master’s of Divinity degree in 1991.
In 1992, McPherson founded Miles Ahead, a nonprofit organization that reaches out to youth around the globe with the Gospel. Since its inception, more than 45,000 young people have given their lives to the Lord.
McPherson also earned an Emmy Award in 2007 for a documentary on methamphetamine, available through Miles Ahead.
He founded The Rock Church in 2000. More than 3,300 attended the first service on Feb. 27, in Montezuma Hall at San Diego State University. He said it is believed to have been the largest opening service in the nation’s history.
The book addresses Satan’s lies to lure people to sin—including their obsession with image and their feelings of worthlessness, along with pressures to follow the crowd.
“This book helps readers see themselves through God’s eyes and motivates one to reflect light to and onto others,” said McPherson.
The book also has a companion six-session DVD series and discussion guide.
