VATICAN CITY (WordNews.org) March 13, 2013 — Cardinals gathered in Vatican City have selected Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio to become the next pope.
He is the church’s first leader to come from the Americas. He selected the name Pope Francis.
His selection come about a month after Pope Benedict XVI announced he would be retiring at the end of February, the first pope to resign in 600 years.
The Knights of Columbus’ Supreme Knight Carl Anderson extended best wishes to the new pope.
“Pope Francis is well known also for his emphasis on charity – the first principle of the Knights of Columbus,” he said. “Both in our efforts for evangelization and in our charitable work, we will strive with him to bring the light of Christ to the people of our continent during his historic pontificate.”
