WASHINGTON, D.C. (WordNews.org) April 29, 2013 – The 24th annual U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon began last night at 6 and ends on Thursday afternoon at 1.
The Bible readings began with Genesis 1:1 and every word of the Bible will be read aloud without commentary, organizers said. Bibles are on hand in 100 languages, and every culture, age, denomination, race and political party will be represented.
During the five days, hundreds of believers are expected to gather at the nation’s capital. Readings are taking place on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol.
The U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon began in 1990, the year proclaimed by a Joint Congressional Resolution and Presidential Proclamation by President George H. W. Bush as the International Year of Bible Reading. Organizers said the event serves to honor the Bible, celebrate religious freedom and unite the diverse branches of Christianity around the Bible.
Readers who participate come from many backgrounds and locations all across America. Members of Congress and world-renowned Christian leaders and pastors stand alongside street people, families, military personnel, school children, nurses, teachers, and otherwise ordinary believers to raise up the Word of God.
“Even at hours when no one is likely to be listening, and in weather when people are not likely to be outside, it’s important we continue reading,” said the Rev. Robert Schenck, who was scheduled to read at 4 a.m. today. Schenck leads Faith and Action, which is located a block from the Capitol. “Reading the Bible non-stop, outdoors, no matter what, at the seat of American politics and government is important because it’s both about declaring this eternal truth and about our First Amendment freedoms of speech, religion, and association. Constitutional rights are like muscles, if you don’t use them, you’ll lose them.”
