VENTURA, Calif. (WordNews.org) Feb. 18, 2021 — A new Barna study finds that four out of five black adults who align themselves with a faith group agree with this sentiment: “To understand the African American experience, it is necessary to understand the role of religious faith in the lives of black people.”

Barna said 41 percent of those surveyed “strongly” agreed with that sentiment and another 38 percent “somewhat” agreed with it. That’s up 8 percentage points since 1996 when Barna last included it in a survey.

According to Barna, members of the black church are “even more insistent that faith is crucial to the black experience,” with 88 percent either strongly agreeing or somewhat agreeing. Of the black adults surveyed, 87 percent said faith is a source of emotional strength.

The survey also found a decline in the desirability of church involvement among black adults. According to the survey, 74 percent of those survey said church involvement was either very or somewhat desirable. That’s down from 90 percent in 1996.

Among Boomers, there is greater enthusiasm for church engagement (66 percent say it is very desirable). However, that number drops to 55 percent among Gen X, 51 percent among Millennials and 46 percent among Gen Z.
