NEW YORK (WordNews.org) Feb. 21, 2017  – Following the recent death of Norma McCorvey, “Jane Roe” in the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case that legalized abortion nationally, The Children First Foundation is highlighting the need for states to allow residents to have the choice to have “Choose Life” on their license plates.

Elizabeth Rex, president of the foundation, said she met McCorvey in 2001 during a benefit cruise around the island of Manhattan. McCorvey was promoting adoption for those with unplanned pregnancies. She was a solid supporter of the pro-adoption “Choose Life” message on license plates being pursued in New York and across the country, Rex said.

To date, New York continues to forbid the “Choose Life” message on its license plates for those that choose to have that message. New Yorkers can choose plates that highlight their favorite sports team, regions or other causes, but Rex says the pro-life message is being censored.

On May 22, 2015, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the foundation’s pro-adoption New York “Choose Life” License Plate was “patently offensive” and could be “censored” by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Former Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey, a renowned constitutional scholar, reported on the split decision in a scathing article entitled, “The DMV’s Lunatic Speech Dictatorship.” The New York Post even changed the headline to: “DMV acts as if we live in Pyongyang.”

New York is among three states that forbid the license plate. The other two states are California and Illinois.
