KOUNTZE, Texas (WordNews.org) Sept. 24, 2012 – A Christian legal group is urging Americans to email a Texas superintendent and tell him to stop banning the free speech of cheerleaders who were told to stop putting Bible verses on banners.
Kountze Independent School District’s superintendent, Kevin Weldon, told the cheerleaders’ parents that student groups are not allowed to display religious signs at school-sponsored events, according to the American Family Association.
The district issued the edict after the Freedom from Religion Foundation notified the school it had received a complaint from a parent.
Cheerleader Macy Matthews said no school money was used and the signs weren’t made on school property, according to AFA.
Liberty Institute President Kelly Shackelford offered his legal team’s help in the local investigation.
“These government school officials will never learn that students’ religious rights are protected,” he said. “We have successfully passed state laws protecting student religious speech and have won restraining orders to final judgments protecting student religious speech.”
The institute is urging people to contact the Texas Association of School Boards’ executive director, James Crowe, and ask the association, which advised the district to bar the Scriptural signs, to reverse its decision.
Kountze is 85 miles northeast of Houston.

Updated: A judge granted a temporary restraining order against Kountze Independent School District so that the cheerleaders can continue to encourage their football team with spirited banners and signs.
