Department of Homeland Security briefs ministries about potential security threats

PHOENIX (WordNews.org) Nov. 23, 2012 –In a behind closed doors meeting with faith groups, the Department of Homeland Security is highlighting potential threats to faith groups.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is urging Christian ministries to educate their members and congregations about potential security threats and prepare for potential threats as a result of escalating violence in the Middle East.

The Christian Emergency Network participated in a briefing with the DHS Faith-based Security and Communications Committee where officials warned faith groups to be on guard during the Christmas season.

DHS did not report being aware of any specific domestic threats, however they did advise national ministry leaders in the briefing that was closed to the press that the escalating violence in the Middle East, along with other activities surrounding the release of films such as the one depicting the demise of Osama Bin Laden pose concern.

Following the DHS briefing, CEN held a conference call to update national ministries on the current situation.

“As national, state and local law enforcement beef up their security measures during the holidays increasing airport marshalls, tracking suspicious reports and increasing security at large events, so too, churches are wise to examine their own emergency operations plans and prepare their security teams, all while they guide their flocks to seek the baby born in a manger,” said CEN President Mary Marr. “Christian leaders are being called upon to help the flock face the reality of our times with godly wisdom, help seekers to find the pathway to eternal peace through Christ, and to lead the charge for a maximum biblical response.”

CEN provided the following recommendations to ministry leaders:

* Spend Time Interceding:
CEN Prayer Officer: “Meditate on Isaiah 3: 8-9 as this picture looks a lot like our nation today. Just as Abraham took the time to intercede for Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18:20-33), spend some time when you are with loved ones confessing and interceding for our nation.

* Report Suspicious Activity:
CEN Security Officer: “Be part of the solution of sparing lives. If you see something suspicious, report it to your local law enforcement immediately as well as to CEN at christianemergencynetwork.org. Be specific including time, location, description, and means of contact such as an email. Do not provide your personal information. CEN will monitor trends to assist and alert the Christian community at large domestically.

* Review Your Ministry Continuity and Emergency Operations Plans Including Your Cyber Security Plans With Your Staff:
CEN Security Officer: “Insure your security protocols are followed. Consider security drills with your security teams prior to large events or services, which have been well publicized. * Be Peace Makers Not Peace Breakers:
CEN Administration Officer: “Provide a positive counter response to those who would seek to gather in protest to the film releases over the next few weeks. Rather turn that negative energy into positive local organizing of your city.

* Thank Your First Responders:
CEN Care Officer: “When traveling take the time to stop and thank security professionals such as airport screeners or flight crews for providing a safe trip. Or, just say thanks to your police and fire fighters when you see them on the street.”

* Share Your Faith
CEN Share Officer: “The greatest way to share your faith especially in a crisis or disaster- or even a family Christmas gathering — is to show the light of Christ by your actions, your love in motion, your compassion in action. Don’t come to those seeking answers with judgment.”
