United Methodist membership drops by nearly 109,000

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WordNews.org) March 8, 2012 — The United Methodist Church, the second largest Protestant denomination in the country, as seen its U.S. membership drop by 108,870 from 2009 to 2010, according to new figures released by the church.

The United Methodist Church now has 7.57 million members. The drop follows a similar trend at other mainline denominations, said the Institute on Religion and Democracy.

The Episcopal Church lost 54,436 members to fall below 2 million members in 2010. The Roman Catholic Church and Assemblies of God denominations have seen increases in membership and the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant denomination in the U.S., stayed flat. IRD said since the 1960s, United Methodism in the U.S. has lost nearly 4.5 million members, what it described as “a nearly record loss for any Christian denomination.
