The morning after … the ruling: Abortion pill now available for kids, no parent approval needed

NEW YORK (WordNews.org) morningafter pillApril 6, 2013 — A group is calling for the impeachment of a New York federal judge who ruled that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration must make the morning-after abortion pill, also known as Plan B, available to anyone regardless of their age.

Judge Edward Korman’s ruling overturns a 2011 decision by the Health and human Services Scretary, Kathleen Sebelius, that required girls under 17 get a prescription.

Friday’s order came in response to a lawsuit launched by the Center for Reproductive Rights. The group was seeking to expand access to all brands of the morning-after pill over the counter, such as Plan B One-Step and Next Choice, so that women of all ages would be able to purchase them without a prescription.

Korman’s order was in to a lawsuit filed by the Center for Reproductive Rights. The group wants to increase the access to all abortion-pill brands.

“Today science has finally prevailed over politics,” Nancy Northup, the center’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “This landmark court decision has struck a huge blow to the deep-seated discrimination that has for too long denied women access to a full range of safe and effective birth control methods.”

The Population Research Institute criticized the ruling and the judge.

“Talk about your black-robed tyrants,” said Steven Mosher, president of PRI, “This federal judge apparently thinks that he knows better than (1) parents, (2) the Food and Drug Administration, and (3) society at large whether it is good for 13-year-old girls to be able to buy abortifacient drugs like the Morning After Pill.”

PRI said when Plan B fails to prevent ovulation, it works by preventing implantation. This means that it causes early-term abortions. By allowing young girls access to this drug, they will be able to contracept and abort themselves without their parents ever knowing.

“This is an outrageous ruling by a judge on a matter on which he has zero competence,” Mosher said. “Impeachment, anyone?”
